Water Project

The first stage of the Green Cathedral Project focuses on water. The water working group is under the direction of Brett Nilsen, a Principal and Civil Engineer at Connell Wagner, and is exploring the idea of capturing, storing and reusing rooftop and storm water in the precinct. While the principle aim of the water project addresses the use and reuse of water in the precinct, the project partners also aspire to contribute to a cleaner Torrens River, thus improving the water quality of Adelaide's main watercourse.

Plans for the water project include sharing water storage tanks between St. Peter’s Cathedral, St. Mark’s Collegeand the Society of Friends/Quakers with the aim that all three institutions may rely less on mains water. The partners in the southern part of the precinct, SACA, Next Generation/Memorial Drive Tennis Club and Tennis SA are considering various ways of effectively capturing and reusing water.

An overall water management plan for the precinct proposes to connect all institutions within the precinct to manage both storm water run-off and excess water from individual rainwater tanks. Water would be collected in a central location such as a wetland, recycled, and redirected to the precinct as required. These plans would also provide for the irrigation of parklands in North Adelaide.
